Football fans were anticipating a hot showdown on Friday at the Allianz Stadium between the two leading teams in the A-League.

Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar

Going into the match, Sydney FC were top of the table with 10 points and no losses to their name so far. The visitors, Brisbane Roar FC, trailed by just a single point, with convincing wins earlier in the season against Adelaide United, Central Coast Marines and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

Framed by a wall of custom graphics and displays, the 13,000 strong crowd might have been expecting some solid attacking play from the two sides, but it has to be said that defence was the ultimate winner on the day. Impenetrable back lines, combined with a level of uncertainty among those up front saw the game end in a goalless draw – only the second time in their last 12 visits to Sydney that Brisbane have walked away without scoring.

The highlights

In fact, defence was so tight that spectators were treated to only two shots on goal during the entire match. Sydney's first (and last) good opportunity came early on, when Sydney striker Shane Smeltz blasted the ball towards the bottom left of the goal from far outside the box. Goalkeeper Jamie Young was more than up to the challenge, however, and this display of strong defence set the tone for the rest of the game.

When the whistle blew at half time, the teams remained equal at 0 – 0, as you can see in this tweet from Sydney FC:

Another key highlight came during the second half when marquee player Thomas Broich lobbed a superb ball through to Jamie Maclaren deep in Sydney territory. Before Maclaren could get the shot off, however, Rhyan Grant was able to block the attempt and help the Sky Blues keep a clean sheet.

If you missed the game, you can catch some of the highlights in the following YouTube video from ALeagueHD:

Sydney FC remains undefeated

Ultimately, both teams' defences proved too strong for the other to conquer. While it might not have been the most exciting performance we've seen from the two sides, as avid Sydney FC supporters we're more than happy to see the Sky Blues continue their undefeated streak.
