Project Description

Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project. Sydney Metro Northwest, formerly the North West Rail Link, is the first stage of Sydney Metro. Metro City & Southwest is the second stage.

Sydney Metro Northwest will be the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. It is on track to open to customers in the first half of 2019. Sydney Metro Northwest will deliver eight new railway stations and 4,000 commuter car parking spaces to Sydney’s growing North West. Trains will operate every four minutes in the peak with at least 15 trains an hour. Customers won’t need a timetable, you’ll just turn up and go.

Sydney Metro Northwest will deliver, for the first time, a reliable public transport service to a region which has the highest car ownership levels per household in Australia. Over the coming decades, an extra 200,000 people will move into Sydney’s North West, taking its population above 600,000, or twice the size of Canberra.

Sydney’s new generation of fast, safe and reliable metro trains will be rolled out on Sydney Metro Northwest first. They will have the highest levels of customer safety including constant CCTV monitoring and platform screen doors to improve safety on platforms. These screen doors, at the edge of the platform, keep people and objects away from the edge, allowing trains to get into and out of stations much faster.

The project includes construction of twin 15 km tunnels from Bella Vista to Epping which are Australia’s longest rail tunnels. This contract was awarded in late June 2013 and four tunnel boring machines are now on the ground.

At the Sydney Royal Easter Show 2017, Sydney Metro craned in an impressive 1:1 scale mock-up of the new carriage.

Proj-X Design was tasked to build an activation space in front of the carriage to provide information about the project with careful planning of traffic flow to move the large Easter Show crowds in and then out of the train.

The 17.5mL & 3mL wall was produced from aluminium extrusion with printed blackout fabric skin. The space was fitted out with custom-made plinths with iPad’s and smaller models of the overall train to capture public interest and answer questions about the project. Additionally, a VR experience into the tunnel boring machine provided an immersive experience of the construction project.
